Production insights

We would like to give you a glimpse behind the scenes of our specialised company for ornamental plants - more precisely, into our production of young plants, raw material and plants ready for sale.

We cultivate young plants all year round. The first step is to put young unrooted cuttings into the soil so that they take roots.

In spring, for example, we produce pelargoniums, petunias, calibracho, plectranthus and various herbaceous plants.

For the summer we produce perennials such as delphinium, digitalis and echinacea.

For autumn we cultivate, for example, the ever-popular viola tricolor and viola cornuta, as well as various grasses, hedera, lunaria, sedum species, symphyotrichum, heuchera, muehlenbeckia and euphorbia.

And in winter, of course, we already prepare for spring with cuttings for the bed and balcony, such as fuchsias, petunias and pelargoniums – but also primula, erysimum cheiri, myosotis or bergenias.

Therefore a large number of the plants offered in our assortment come out of our own production!
We even have our own cultivars, such as various hydrangeas, pelargoniums, cleomes and lobelias.

Our main planting season is from mid-December to February. During our peak weeks, our employees plant no less than 700,000 cuttings per week.

Our little seedlings are growing. However, to ensure that this process doesn't happen too quickly so that the plants can develop vigorously from the ground up, our “Nora” has to get involved from time to time. Nora is our pruning machine and helps us to grow strong and healthy plants. She shortens the young shoots so that they do not "shoot" to fast.

Our little seedlings have taken the first step as soon as they have developed a strong root system. Now they are put into pots, grow and get bigger. As soon as the young plants have reached a certain size but have not yet flowered, we call them raw plants.

With all these young plants that want to be potted, we naturally need active support. We get this from our state-of-the-art potting machines, which already fill the soil into the pots and prepare them for placing the cuttings.

Our young plants naturally need round-the-clock care. They are fertilised, pruned, watered and sprayed with plant strengthening agents to make them more resistant to fungi and pests. Like small children, our young plants need love and attention.

We pay much attention to the point to work as ecologically as possible. Our irrigation system, for example, is a closed water circuit. Water is pumped onto the tables and remains there for a few minutes. The water that is not needed runs back into the storage tank via a drain and stays there, ready for the next watering process. The advantage of this system is obvious: we have no water loss and can also water the plant from below. This way the leaves do not get wet and the plant not becomes weakened and therefore less vulnerable to possible fungi and pests. Finally, we have to use less plant strengthening agents.

But of course we also water in the traditional way from above to increase the humidity or apply plant strengthening agents to the plant. This process will be settled either by hand or with the help of our watering machine.

We sell young plants as well as raw material and later finished products in large quantities to gardeners and major customers in Germany, Austria, Slovenia, Poland and Slovakia. Of course, these plants have to be well packed and prepared for dispatch so that they reach our customers safely and in the best quality.
